Thrush is a common infection that affects both men and women. It's caused by a fungus called candida and is usually harmless if you’re in generally good health. It can be bothersome since it can cause some discomfort and may keep coming back.
Thrush can affect anyone, but it may be more likely in those who have reduced immunity. This includes babies, the elderly, and people who take certain medications, like those that suppress their immune system. In these people, thrush might be more severe and harder to control.
Thrush generally lasts between 7-14 days once you start your treatment for it. In some cases, you might have recurring thrush, which is when thrush comes back even after treatment. In this case, you might need treatment for a while longer, and this could be for up to 6 months.
Thrush is an infection that can be caused by a yeast. It’s called candida and is normally harmless. Thrush tends to grow in warm, damp conditions and develops if the balance of bacteria in that area changes somehow. You might be more likely to get thrush if you:
Thrush can affect a few areas of the body, like the armpits, groin and between the fingers. You can end up with red, itchy, painful rashes that scale over with thick white or yellow discharge.
Thrush can affect men and women a little differently, and some of the symptoms are below.
Thrush symptoms in women:
You might find it useful to keep a symptom diary to help tell if you have symptoms of thrush. You should try and be as detailed as possible in this diary, including information like:
The information you make note of in your diary can be extremely useful if you need to talk to your doctor about whether you have symptoms of a different health conditions, like trichomoniasis or something else.
If you have symptoms of thrush, we would recommend using treatment to clear the symptoms. Sometimes a mild thrush infection can clear on its own, but treatments can help it to clear faster. If you are not sure that your symptoms are because of thrush, or are worried about your symptoms the best thing to do would be to speak to a doctor about this.
You can complete an assessment for thrush treatment, and our Alpha XR online doctors will recommend if the treatment is needed, or you can see your GP about this.
At Alpha XR Online Doctor, we offer Clotrimazole cream and pessaries and Fluconazole tablets as treatments for thrush.
Generally speaking, tablets, pessaries and creams work as well as each other, so which one you choose is a matter of personal preference. You should remember that whatever treatment you end up taking, you should finish your full course even if you’re feeling much better. There’s a chance that your Thrush will come back if you don’t finish your course.
There are a few things you can do or not do, which can ease your discomfort and stop thrush returning. You should:

Placing an order for Clotrimazole and Fluconazole from Alpha XR Online Doctor is simple and convenient. Follow the ‘how to order’ steps in the ‘how our service works’ section above.
At Alpha XR Online Doctor, we offer Clotrimazole cream and pessaries and Fluconazole tablets as treatments for thrush. Like all medications both of these can cause side effects. These treatments generally work as well as each other, but there are some differences in side effects they can cause. Oral tablets might make you feel sick, and give you diarrhoea or a headache, while pessaries can cause some irritation to the area and a discharge.
If your symptoms are only external, for example just itching of the skin around the vulva, Clotrimazole cream can be used. However if you have any discharge or soreness inside the vagina the Clotrimazole pessary and Fluconazole tablets would work better, as the cream cannot treat the symptoms inside the vagina.
